A short video where you can hear Miles say "da da."
I got out of jury duty! Whoo hoo!
Well, it was inevitable that I would move and get my new license and immediately get a summons for jury duty. This has happened to me since I turned 18. Got my first summons within days of turning 18 and at every address change since. Twice I've been chosen to actually sit on a jury. I am going to try and get out of it, so cross your fingers for me. Since being pregnant is one of the valid excuses for dismissal, as is being a stay-at-home parent to a child under the age of 6, I am hoping my written-in excuse of bein on maternity leave and breastfeeding an infant is acceptable as well.
We received the pictures from Miles' session at JC Penney's via email this morning. Of course they are low res so you won't print them out yourself and will order extra copies from them (although I may still print them from Shutterfly anyway). Enjoy!
There is so much to say that I don't know where to begin! Month three has definitely been the best month so far. Miles' oersonality and his likes and dislikes are really starting to show. He hates being covered no matter how cold a room is. He will kick his feet like crazy until he kicks his blanket off, so I have to put him in a sleep sack or footy pajamas at night so I know he'll be warm enough. He also absolutely hates going for car rides. Have you ever heard of a baby that doesn't like going in the car?! I think he has a bit of separation anxiety and gets upset because he is alone and can't see me. I hope this changes soon!
Miles LOVES being hed and is basically carried all day. He now wants to sit up like a big boy, but I couldn't really prop him up anymore with the Boppy so we got him this green Bumbo and voila, problem solved. He loves it!
We have also had to do some serious research on how to get Miles to sleep better at night. He was doing really well for a while, going 4 hours at a stretch and then reverted back to that horrible newborn phase of waking every two or even ONE hour. So I fnally found this book, The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night (there are excerpts available at that link) and we've been doing MUCH better. Miles is now sleeping 5 hours at a time regularly. He's not 100% consistent, but we're getting there. Again, lots of well-meaning folks will give REALLY BAD advice, like, "Keep the baby up during the day so he;ll zsleep better at night" but there is nothing worse than an overtired baby! We are now establishing a nighttime routine. This combined with two naps a day has made all the difference in the world and I highly recommend the book. That whole "cry it out" method or Ferber just does not sit right with me and it's really not necessary to do it to get baby to sleep.
And can I rave a moment about the Kelly Mom website?! Every question I've ever had about breastfeeding has been answered on this site
Here is a picture of Dr. Uffelman holding Miles, taken today in our hospital room. Obviously it would've been nice if their first picture together was taken in the delivery room, but at least we still got the shot! Miles even got a kiss from Dr. U!
A girl I went to high school with just gave birth to a baby boy
yesterday. She lives in Boston and was seeing a midwife throughout her
pregnancy (she switched from an OBGYN fairly early on in the pregnancy)
and was hoping for an all-natural delivery. She was taking Bradley
classes to assist with breathing and was practicing kegels, squats,
taylor presses, etc. Well, she finally went into labor and it was a
disaster! She was in hard labor for about 60 hours and only progressed
to 4 cm and eventually had to go to the hospital for a C-section. Her
baby was over 10 pounds and this girl is barely 5' tall. Her baby is in
NICU because he is having respiratory problems and won't be able to go
home for a while. He was born about 10 days past his due date and
according to her mother is so big he looks like a 3-month old.
I spoke to this girl via chat last week and asked if she had thought
about getting induced and she gave me a HUGE attitude about it. I
distinctly remember saying it's better to get induced and still get to
deliver vaginally then let yourself go so long that the baby is too big
and you require a C-section. She didn't like that at all! I think she
was receiving shoddy care because I am convinced she had gestational
diabetes that went undiagnosed. No woman as tiny as she is (in HS she
weighed about 80 pounds) is likely to have such a huge baby. Plus, it
is very common for GD babies to be born with breathing problems, which
are typically only seen in preemies. It sucks that her birthing
experience was not what she wanted it to be, but it is sort of
reassuring to me that maybe I am making the best choice by going with
an OBGYN. If, God forbid, I do need a C-section I will already be at
the hospital and at least I got tested for everything under the sun.
Hopefully she'll be able to take her baby home soon.
