Here is a picture of Dr. Uffelman holding Miles, taken today in our hospital room. Obviously it would've been nice if their first picture together was taken in the delivery room, but at least we still got the shot! Miles even got a kiss from Dr. U!
A girl I went to high school with just gave birth to a baby boy
yesterday. She lives in Boston and was seeing a midwife throughout her
pregnancy (she switched from an OBGYN fairly early on in the pregnancy)
and was hoping for an all-natural delivery. She was taking Bradley
classes to assist with breathing and was practicing kegels, squats,
taylor presses, etc. Well, she finally went into labor and it was a
disaster! She was in hard labor for about 60 hours and only progressed
to 4 cm and eventually had to go to the hospital for a C-section. Her
baby was over 10 pounds and this girl is barely 5' tall. Her baby is in
NICU because he is having respiratory problems and won't be able to go
home for a while. He was born about 10 days past his due date and
according to her mother is so big he looks like a 3-month old.
I spoke to this girl via chat last week and asked if she had thought
about getting induced and she gave me a HUGE attitude about it. I
distinctly remember saying it's better to get induced and still get to
deliver vaginally then let yourself go so long that the baby is too big
and you require a C-section. She didn't like that at all! I think she
was receiving shoddy care because I am convinced she had gestational
diabetes that went undiagnosed. No woman as tiny as she is (in HS she
weighed about 80 pounds) is likely to have such a huge baby. Plus, it
is very common for GD babies to be born with breathing problems, which
are typically only seen in preemies. It sucks that her birthing
experience was not what she wanted it to be, but it is sort of
reassuring to me that maybe I am making the best choice by going with
an OBGYN. If, God forbid, I do need a C-section I will already be at
the hospital and at least I got tested for everything under the sun.
Hopefully she'll be able to take her baby home soon.
I decided to make up my own QoTD.
What celebrity do you get told you look like?
If you can name a black female celebrity with light skin and curly hair, I've probably been told I look like her. I think the two most accurate are Audra McDonald and Rachel True.
Have you ever served on a jury? What was your experience?

Yes, I was chosen to serve the last month I lived in NYC. The case was pretty interesting, but it sucked being stuck in the courtroom all day for 4 days. The last day we were to decide on monetary damages and I was late because the trains were all screwed up. By the time I got there the parties had agreed on a settlement, so it actually worked out best for everyone.
What a weekend! Saturday I ended up breaking down and taking Sunny to the vet to the tune of $135. He was still having diarrhea and I was worried it might be something serious. They couldn't find a thing wrong with him, nothing in his stool, no worms, no nothing, but they gave me some anti-diarrhea meds and an intestinal antibiotic. I also bought some special dog food, which is essentially like giving the dog bland chicken and rice. His stomach is still not quite right, but hopefully he'll be all better in a day or two. They took so long at the vet that I missed my hair appointment, so now I have to wait two more weeks to get it cut! It looks awful, all overgrown with no shape. I can't really do anything til the 21st, though, because I have to get my oil changed this Saturday and then Jovan and I are going to the Babies R Us baby shower from 11-2 and then we have the therapist at 3. Busy day!
In baby news, I am finally feeling baby kick! It's a super strange sensation. I know it is different for every woman, but for me it feels like popcorn popping in my stomach. It's totally weird. I can't wait til the movements get stronger and you can actually see them through my stomach! I am also starting to make milk already! Last night I was admiring my new huge boobs and when I squeezed my left nipple some clear liquid squirted out. You always think of your nipple as being one hole, but there are actually a bunch of tiny little holes and liquid came out of all of them! I am not sure if this already colostrum because that is typically yellowish in color, but something is definitely going on in there! Pretty miraculous.
Other than that, I made delicious meatball subs for dinner last night with french fries. It's a Rachael Ray recipe and I posted it to Gather during the Superbowl. They came out soooo good, even though we only had ground turkey instead of ground sirloin. Still super tasty and filling.
OK, it's lunch time now!
Hope everyone had a good 4th of July. Our was pretty nice. I woke up fairly early and took Sunny for a walk. He still had diarrhea, poor thing, so after I gave him some rice with a little bit of cooked chicken, I went to CVS to get him some Pepto. I got a little plastic syringe so I could squirt it in his mouth, and some sunscreen for the beach. Once I got home, Jo and I got ready to go to our friend Stevie's annual 4th of July BBQ on the beach in Boca. It was a good time, as usual. We pigged out and laughed for a couple of hours until we could see it was starting to get dark so we figured we'd better get in the water before it was too late. We managed to swim around for about 10-15 minutes before the lightning and drizzling started up and got back under the tent just in time for it to pour! There were a ton of people there so it was super cramped under that tent but once the rain let up we just went home. Thankfully Sunny didn't go in the house and his poop looked a *little* better. I gave him some more Pepto but he didn't make this morning on his walk so I hope he will be OK until Jovan gets home from work! Poor doggy. Maybe the Pepto has him totally stopped up? I am sure I'll find out later!
Other than that, not much else to report. Still not feeling the baby or at least I don't think I am. I felt something last night, like a bubble popping inside of me, but I am not sure if that was gas or the baby. I'll be glad once I hit the 6 month mark (in 3 weeks!!!) and I'll actually be able to feel genuine kicks and punches.
Oh, mom spotted Dr. Uffelman at the hospital this morning. He was there delivering a baby and asked about me. Mom told him that my ear pain that I told him about turned out to be a really bad infection and I ended up at ECare and she said he was upset and felt bad. I was glad she had the chance to yell at him on my behalf. :-)
What a wasted weekend! Friday night Jovan and I went out to dinner at a local sushi place. The food was good and we had a really good time. My ear was starting to act up again and I couldn't hear out of it very well, but I felt OK. Saturday morning we got up and ran some errands. We went to the post office, the mall, to our couples counseling, then to the grocery store. My ear was totally clogged and I couldn't hear a thing, but I still felt OK. We decided to go see Spiderman 3 (which was good) and during the whole movie my ear was bothering me. It had really started to hurt and I felt like crap. By the time we got home I was DYING. I was up all night because the pain was so bad I couldn't even sleep. The pain was like nothing I had ever felt before in my life. Worse than getting my wisdom teeth removed, way worse than any cramps or backache or anything else. It was a huge sensation of pressure in my ear, coupled with a stabbing, burning pain deep inside my ear and head that even affected my jaw. Every time I burped, sneezed or attempted to blow my nose it hurt like hell. I literally cried it hurt so bad and I'm normally not a wuss when it comes to pain. I had a fever again, too. So first thing Sunday morning I went to my insurance's web site to see what clinics I could go to. Only ONE was actually open on Sunday and not until 11 so I suffered until then and then Jovan and I headed over. We were out of there by 12:30 and I had been diagnosed with a raging ear infection and given antibiotics and an antibiotic ear drop. It took three doses to get any relief so I was in total misery all yesterday until the middle of the night when the pain finally subsided. I had already called in sick last night because I didn't think there was any way I could make it through the day if the pain still hadn't gone away. I feel much better today. The fever is gone, the intense pain is gone, but I still can't hear out of my ear and every now and again I feel like a dull aching pain that goes away quickly. The doctor at the urgent care clinic told me I had a huge chunk of wax in my ear but he didn't want to flush it out because it was hard and crusty and he said it would hurt like hell. So they told me to come back in a few days because the drops will soften the wax, making it easier to irrigate out. Anyway, that was my exciting weekend. We didn't get to go to the brunch or take advantage of the nice weather. I'll be at work tomorrow though.
